It’s chaotic, fun, and readers are encouraged to break out their best pencils and brightest colours to bring the characters to life. Can you briefly talk us through your creative process, from planning if this applies to finished illustration? I think bringing people together is one of the magical things it can do. Once scanned I might clean them up a bit in Photoshop and then colour them in. But it’s not just about colouring.

Jon Burgerman’s Burgerworld
We spent half an hour chatting to Jon about his new book, his life, the universe, doodles and everything Then everyone started photographing their lunches so it was time to move on. What was the main trigger for starting a career in illustration? I got a break early on to make an LP cover for Charles Webster.

But it’s not just about colouring. Burgerman has made a living from successfully encouraging adults and children to interact with his doodled inventions, and Burgerworld is no different. Creativity exists everywhere, there are opportunities everywhere. To help that happen, Burgerman punctuates the pages with regular comments that provide context and backstory to the doodles “At coloug pizza disco you have to dance like crazy for 30 mins to get a slice of pie”and let you in on the joke as with a spread of sausage doodles that’s simply entitled “The Sausage People of Argentweiner”.
The process is very simple and often quite quick.

There’s plenty of space for users to to sketch their own worlds as they work through the book, while a tick-list of creatures and objects to find adds extra interest. That said, a lot of people do find success by posting the same old stuff again and again. Confidence is a really tricky burgermzns.
The abstract feel of his monsters and strange characters make the book suitable for audiences both old and young, while the byrgermans of the doodles covers a wide range of burrgermans except for very young children.
